Mazafati Dates of Bam

Mazafati is the soft, dark rutab date of Bam in Kerman province, south-east Iran, and it is the date most Pakistani families mean when they ask for Irani khajoor. Picked fully ripe, the fruit is almost black, with a thin glossy skin and moist, caramel-sweet flesh that melts in the mouth. Our Mazafati is graded for size and sealed in trays so it reaches you soft rather than dry or sugary.

In Pakistan these dates are a Ramadan fixture: open the fast with khajoor and water, add them to the iftar platter beside pakoras and fruit chaat, or blend a couple into a cold milkshake. In winter, a few Mazafati with a cup of chai make an easy energy snack, and they are gentler on children and elders than hard, dry varieties.
