Tabriz, in north-west Iran, is one of the great carpet-weaving cities of the world, and the Mahi design is one of its signatures. Named after the Persian word for fish, the pattern repeats tiny leaf-and-fish motifs across the whole field in a lattice that looks different from every angle.
This 200 × 300 cm piece is hand-knotted with the Turkish knot in fine wool, with silk highlights that make the motifs glow in the light. Every hand-knotted carpet is woven by one workshop over many months, so this is a single, one-of-a-kind piece: colours and small details may differ slightly from the photos, and once it is sold it is gone. It is the kind of drawing-room carpet Pakistani families pass on to the next generation.
