Black raisins are sun-dried seedless dark grapes with a deep, wine-like sweetness and a soft, chewy texture. Drying in full sun concentrates the natural sugars and gives them their dark colour without any added sugar or colouring. Iran has supplied raisins to the region for centuries, and these Irani kali kishmish are cleaned and graded before packing.
Many Pakistani families soak eight to ten black raisins overnight and eat them first thing in the morning, a habit handed down by grandmothers and kept up especially in winter. They are also delicious in kheer and firni, in fruit cake and rusk dough, stirred into oats or yoghurt, and in a mixed dry-fruit bowl with almonds and walnuts. Their richer taste works well in tamarind and date chutneys too.
